Bike-N-Hike

Hike-N-Bike (끌바)?
When mountain biking in rugged terrain, should not ride a bike in the dangerous sections to avoid any accident or whatever situation, saying "Hike the bike" (Hike-N-Bike). Depending on the trail condition, for example one can make 90% biking and 10% hiking on the entire trail. Of course, one always carries the bike while hiking. See below picture, this is a case kids had hard time to clear up-hill, not because of dangerous section.

What’s Bike-N-Hike?
This is a little different concept, differentiating from the Hike-N-Bike(끌바). I was bit surprised when I did first time dispersed camping in the Eldorado national forest. It looks there is not much regulation implemented in the forest except fire restriction & max stay limit 14 days. Basically, you can go anywhere wherever you like and you can do dispersed camping (Be careful, there are few exceptions though). The beauty of this kind is you don’t need to reserve your camping spot and it’s just free of charge.

For outdoor enthusiasts, national forest can be base camp for many different adventures, there are plenty of trails. Sadly, mountain biking is not allowed in wilderness areas (like Emigrant, Mokelumne). The only option is to enjoy the wilderness areas is by foot traffic. So, Bike-N-Hike concept comes in here. It means that one enjoys mountain biking in national forest section, hide the bike in forest & wilderness boundary and then hike the remaining sections in the wilderness areas, return to the place to retrieve the bike and complete the adventure by bike. One can’t carry the bike while hiking in wilderness. This is the reason why one needs to hide the bike in national forest section.

An example Bike-N-Hike adventure I’m planning.
By bike: From Highway 108 to Leavitt lake is 3 miles long. By hike: Leavitt Lake/Peak to Night Cap Peak. (Emigrant Wilderness). Total trip mileage is about 20 miles. 14 miles by hike and 6 miles by bike.

Another example in Big Meadow area (Lake Tahoe & Carson Pass, CA).
